Exhibition Game set for November 24
(Tuesday, October 29, 2019 Moncton, NB.) For the first time in franchise history the Magic will welcome an opponent from abroad as part of their preseason schedule. The team announced earlier this month they will host an exhibition game against the Raleigh Firebirds of the United States’ TBL (The Basketball League) on Sunday, November 24that the Avenir Centre. The game is scheduled for a 2pm tipoff, and presented by Boston Pizza Moncton.
Magic Head Coach and GM of Player Operations Joe Salerno is excited about the event, and what should be a very competitive game.
“This is a great opportunity for both our players, our fans, and our league “commented Salerno. “Any time you have the chance to play a new opponent, from another league or country, there brings a little more excitement to the air. This will also be the first time that our fans here in Moncton have the opportunity to see us back at the Avenir Centre this season, and to be playing against an opponent from the United States make it all that more intriguing from them. I am familiar with Coach Brickey and the Firebirds. They will be a very solid team, one that will come in and compete right from the tip.”
The Firebirds, who will be entering their second season in the TBL are based out of Raleigh, North Carolina. The team’s Head Coach, Robert Brickey, played for Duke University from 1986-1990, where he was part of 3 NCAA Final Four teams. He also is no stranger to the NBL Canada, having coached the Oshawa Power back in 2011-2012. Last season, the Firebirds finished their regular season 15-13, before eventually losing to the Albany Patroons in the first round of the playoffs. The Patroons went on to win the TBL Championship.
Managing Partner and Director of Player Development for the Firebirds Wade Harris says their team is excited and grateful for the opportunity.
“The Firebirds are humbled by this opportunity to represent the TBL and USA in an exhibition game against the Moncton Magic of the NBL Canada. We are thankful for the NBL and TBL creating this wonderful platform where young players can continue to showcase their talents” stated Harris.
VP of Operations for the Magic, Mike Storey, is looking forward to kicking the season off. “After such success on the court last season, this off-season has felt like it took forever. We are excited to get back on the court, and get back to the business of winning and playing professional Basketball.”
Fans will have the opportunity to meet and learn more about the Raleigh, North Carolina based team at a live Press Event, hosted by Boston Pizza on Mountain Road in Moncton, on Saturday, November 23rdat 3:30pm. Both the Magic and the Firebirds will have players and coaches on hand at the live emceed event discussing the game and taking questions from both press and fans. The event is free and open to the public, and it is suggested one arrives early, as seating could be limited.
Tickets for the November 24thtilt will go on sale at the Avenir Centre box office and online at www.ticketmaster.caNovember 9th. The game will also be streamed live on NBLClive.ca.
